Established in 2005, The Green Room offers individual instruction in piano, voice, and music theory/sightreading for children through adults. During lessons technique, music theory, ear-training, sight-reading, and musical interpretation are emphasized. There is no "official" age requirement for starting lessons at The Green Room. However, piano students must be beginning to read text to enroll. Vocal students must know how to read text and basic music notation; piano lessons are generally a prerequisite for beginning vocal lessons. If you take a moment to read about our students' successes, you will find that Green Room students are taught solid technique that enables them to excel in all musical genres.
The studio is located in The Harkey Family's historic home in Springer Woods. The home is nestled in a quiet, secluded part of Edwardsville but is still convenient for busy students as it is only blocks to downtown Edwardsville and close to many of the area's schools. Springer Woods is a peaceful, retreat-like setting-and the students love seeing deer, foxes, hummingbirds, and other wildlife during their lessons!
the piano
Lessons take place on a lovely 2006 6' 4" Boston Grand Piano that was designed by Steinway & Sons. The piano sits in a corner of the home with beautiful windows that look out into the woods. The shelves are filled with books of music and the walls are hung with original advertising prints of concerts & shows that Jen and/or Jay have been a part of--sure to inspire any student!
waiting areas
The studio and waiting room are divided by a custom designed and built Asian shoji screen. The screen was was brought to life by Jen's dad and husband, and was designed by Jen. It provides just enough privacy for students to feel comfortable but isn't sound-proof so parents can listen to their children make music without feeling invasive.
During warm months, students and parents can relax while they wait on one of the home's two decks that overlook the woods. Other waiting areas include an inviting living room with comfortable couches and a playroom that students' siblings love to explore.
